WALT use dialogue in writing


Rules for using dialogue
  • Make sure it serves a purpose  - if you could read the story without the dialogue and everything still made sense, you don’t need that dialogue. There needs to be a point to the dialogue. Does it drive the plot forward? Does it tell you something about the character?
  • Don’t overuse dialogue tags - said her, said him, said said said said. Sometimes you need to use more interesting tags (replied, quoted, explained, responded) or sometimes you don’t need to use any tags.
  • Don’t make them talk in a vacuum  - in life, other stuff happens while you are talking. Making coffee, coughing, checking phones, etc.
  • Write dialogue like someone is talking  - most of the time people don’t speak in full sentences.
  • Remember who your characters are - an old lady wouldn’t be screaming, a joker would always say something funny, a mean old man wouldn’t use manners.
  • Use the right punctuation.

Examples!


Two people talking


“Hi” said Edith
“Hi” replied Lia while she adjusted her glasses.
“How’s life treating you?
“Good”
“Who's your favourite teacher?
“It’s a secret?”
“Mine is Mrs Barlow” interrupted Joshua as he put down his coffee.
“Yeah she was a good teacher” Edith agreed nodding her head.


When two people are talking you don't need to say 'said Edith said Lia' each time. Once you have established who the characters are, they can just talk and you don't need to say it again and again. When you add a new character (Joshua) you need to say who talked afterwards to re-establish the order.
*make sure your characters are not in a vacuum - Joshua put his coffee down, Edith nodded her head, Lia adjusted her glasses. People move as they talk, you need to include that!*


One person talking
Joshua put down his coffee. “My favourite teacher is Mrs Barlow” he thought.
*When only one person is talking you just keep writing across the page, don't skip down*


Finish these examples!


The old lady got onto the bus slowly. Left foot up. Right foot up. Left foot up. She went to take her seat at the front of the bus, walking to the back would take her an eternity. She glanced at the front seat.

The young boy trudged through the supermarket. He looks shifty, like he was up to no good. He picked up the chocolate bar and slipped it gently into the pocket of his oversized jacket. John, who was packing the shelves further down the aisle called out

Today we did yoga this was the second time doing yoga because it was so hard and i had a stitch because the one that we had to lean on eachother cause the people that were leaning on me they were so heavy when i tried my best to hold them up.

Then we did the hard ones most of them was hard for me i don't think it was hard for my classroom but they were trying there best

WALA limerick

Today we went to pak n save and we went with a parent or buddy from room 9 and we had a parent it was Grace's mum.


We saw Miss Aireen and somebody else went in groups and then when we finished we all went on  the bus because we had to pay $4 for the bus when we got there we had to wait for a while.


Then we saw this lady called Tina I knew that because I was looking on her jacket and on her jacket was a name tag then we got paper from her and she told everything that we need to do inside the pak n save.


Then we went in and headed inside the pak n save then when we got to the entry most of us said pak n save inside has changed then all of us were all inside the pak n save.


And then we went to all of the things that tina said and we all finished then room 8 and 10 had to do  it.It was fun and plus Grace’s mum gave us chocolates

Reflection of kiwisport

Reflection of kiwisport


At basketball we saw these two couches and her name was couch petter and couch hyrum and they told us v bounce,one hand v bounce,and other normal ones.


Then we always go to kiwisport every week and every monday then we started to play golden child,and the last one is line basketball it was cool her and i like kiwi can.


Next monday we got P.E things then we all started to play the games that we play at kiwisport it is amazing their
We were playing cricket with kiwi can and i was getting sixs.


Sixs mean that like how far you hit it then Mr malu got me out cause they were going hard on me but not hard on me.

should phones be in school

phones should be inside schools because you can keep in touch with your family,it can make you learn.


i think that phones should be allowed in school so if someone is hurt they can call the ambulance.


i think that students have one ,but you need to be big enough to have a phone.

for example phones are cool because they can make you learn,you can take photos easily.
we can text your mum,dad so if you get lost you can call the to come to pick you up.

we can call people and do pranks on them.


we can use our phones to use communication to help you to learn about cybersmart.


for example we can have or use our phones to do selfies.

you can play games.
you can blog your photos.

for example we can help and cheat buy going on calculator.

people have phones to do anything they want\.

i think that we should have one cell phone because it is cool.

good to keep up in touch with family, it can help you learn and are can do pranks on people.

Should fidget spinners be allowed to be in class and in school

fidget spinners are a cool stuff to play with and we can fidget when we want to play when we are done it can make you calm down


they are so noizy things but if they are new some times they are not noizy sometimes do


i like fidget spinners because the can make you dizzy sometimes even my friends like them to they play holes with them and you win them most of people play this game so as me to it is so cool and amazing there heaps


of colored fidget spinners they go so fast the more other things like wheels.

Why zoos should be exist?

Why zoos should be exist?


  • I think that zoos should not exist because they threaten them like bad animals that can kill people in the whole world.

  • Some worlds beat up animals and some als countries
Can teach animals like dolphins to jump through hoops
But the people are on the boats teaching them cause they go under water and flap their fins as hard as they can then they fly in the air for like 4 seconds or 5 seconds.

  • I wish they stay in a place where her is no people so they can't beat them up all als they might kill them or shoot them because they are hunters or enemies.

  • Some als people want wish that they can stay in zoos with the zookeepers but if they get sick they take them somewhere and they will take kear with them and they go back and when people come to the zoo they just watch them when they walk around and sometimes the look at the people.

On Monday we had skatebaording but they cancelled it so the teachers think about it and they decided it to play a different thing to do. 

And they said line basketball we meeted at the bottom courts and we started and we lined up behind the yellow line and Miss Ashley said to go boy girl boy girl and we started the game.

When I went I was sweating on my face. we were cheering for Room 7 then the game ended and we went up to class.

Suave magic box

When I had my turn i felt.Then I said remote!” Then miss ashely ask me to describe it and I said the buttons are bumpy,soft,smooth,hard,made of plastic,round buttons,and square buttons.


When I finished my turn her was other students that had her turn .When they had turn they said that the magic box was very heavy.Because miss ashley made it out of cardboard and her was other things touch,smell and feel and also eat.


Theres and hole inside of it and that's the bit that is when you have to put your hand inside of it but miss ashley has to put on a blindfold on our eyes.


I think it was fun because that when i had my turn it was so amazing.
